Quartet Black was commissioned by Britten Pears Arts for the Heath Quartet, and will be performed on Sunday 25th June at the 2023 Aldeburgh Festival. Nathan and the Heath Quartet will give a pre-concert talk an hour before the concert, which also contains Fanny Mendelssohn’s Quartet in E flat, and Britten’s 3rd Quartet. Click here for more details on the Britten Pears Arts website.
The title refers to a colour – like ‘piano black’ – except rather than a physical colour it is a virtual, sonic, or emotional colour.
Nathan describes the work as one which ‘juxtaposes consonance and dissonance, darkness and light and tenderness and rage in a heady cocktail of extremes’.
Further details, including publication of the score, will be available following the premiere.
Nathan will also be blogging about the work in the lead up to the premiere, links of which will be viewable in the news section on his homepage.
