Grey and Green are all my Light

Grey and Green are all my Light is a song-cycle setting poems and poetic prose by Suffolk writer Robert Jellicoe.

The texts are taken from Robert’s recent book, Shorelines: Voices of Southwold Fishermen, which presents a history of fishing and sea-faring in and around Southwold through first-hand testimonies and aural accounts which the author began to collect in the 1970s.

Musically the work is also inspired by folk songs and dances collected by Ralph Vaughan Williams and George Butterworth during their visits to the town in 1910, published by the East Anglian Traditional Music Trust. Many of the characters Vaughan Williams and Butterworth met are referred to in Jellicoe’s book.

New Zealand baritone Jonathan Eyers will give the premiere at Reydon Hall, Suffolk, in April 2023, accompanied by the composer at the piano.
